1. What tasks, do you think, were assigned to the dog and the ox?

Ans: All the animals were assigned different tasks. Since the dog carried sticks around in his mouth, he was assigned the task of fetching them. The ox had a yoke hanging from his neck and was assigned the task of ploughing.

2. Why did the camel live in the middle of the desert?

Ans: The camel was least interested to do any work and help the man. He was the laziest out of all the animals. He lived in the middle of the desert to avoid work. He ate thorns, sticks and prickles. When anyone approached him and talked to him, he would just say “hump.”

3. What made the dog, the horse and the ox very angry?

Ans: The camel was assigned some work but since he was not interested in completing it, the man told the dog, the ox and the horse that he would leave the camel alone but his work should be done by them instead. To get this done, the three of them would have to work double-time. This made the three animals very angry.

4. How did the Djinn know the horse was complaining against the camel?

Ans: The horse complained to the Djinn about an animal's negligence towards his work. He immediately understood that the horse was pointing towards the camel since he was the sole in charge of the desert and knew everything that was going on in the desert.

1. The camel was looking at his own reflection in the pool. What does it suggest to you about the camel?

Ans: The camel was proud of his appearance, especially his back. He loved admiring himself and was looking at his own reflection in the pool.

2. The camel said, "Humph" repeatedly. How did it affect him?

Ans: The horse complained to the Djinn about the camel who was avoiding his work. When the Djinn visited him, he repeatedly said “hump” instead of providing a suitable reply. The Djinn warned him not to say that again and again. But he didn't stop and as a result, he ended up with a big bump on his back.

3. What, according to the Djinn, was the use of the "Humph"?

Ans: The camel got his hump as a consequence of him being lazy and repeatedly saying “hump.” When the hump appeared, the Djinn told him that since the camel had missed his work for three days, he would be able to walk for an equal number of days without eating. The hump would store food for a long time and he would be able to work without taking breaks.

4. "...he has never yet learnt to behave". In the light of this, what is the writer's opinion about the camel?

Ans: The camel is still a very lazy animal who is unwilling to work. When the Djinn gave the camel hump, he asked him to help the other three animals who are working in the desert but the camel didn't learn his lesson properly and still worked lazily as before. He, to this day, is unable to complete the pending work of the missed three days and as a result, carries the hump, according to the writer.
