2. What are the important topics covered in the ICSE class 10 Chemistry syllabus?

The syllabi of the ICSE class 10 chemistry exam consist of 9 units. Semester one of the syllabus includes the first six units and the last three are added in semester two. These 9 units of chemistry are as follows -

  • Study of Acids, Bases and Salts

  • Analytical Chemistry

The first six chapters combined are worth 40 marks and the last three chapters carry another 40 marks.

3. Which chapter is the most crucial of all the chapters included in the syllabus of ICSE class 10 chemistry?

The last unit named Organic Chemistry is the most important chapter in the syllabus of ICSE class 10 Chemistry. It builds the foundation for chemistry in the upper class if the students are going to take the science stream in their higher classes.


The unit Organic Chemistry carries a total of 18 marks out of the 80 total marks of the examination, hence it is the most important chapter in terms of weightage in the exam. Important topics covered in this unit are Introduction to organic compounds, Structure and Isomerism, Homologous series and its characteristics with examples, simple Nomenclatures and Hydrocarbons (Alkanes, Alkenes and Alkynes)

The external examination is worth a total of 80 marks and is further divided into two semesters, semester 1 and semester 2, both worth 40 marks each. Semester 1 includes the first six units of the syllabus and the second semester contains the last three units. The practical examination got 20 marks in it, making a total of 100 marks when combined with the written exam.
