Once upon a time in a dense forest, there lived a fox. He was a very clever fox and was always boastful about his cleverness. No matter where he went, he would always talk about his wit and cleverness. One day, the fox got to talking with a dog in the forest. So, as usual, he started boasting about his wisdom with the dog.


The fox said, “Did you know? I have at least a hundred tricks up my sleeve for running away from danger. If anything comes to harm me, I can use any one of the ways and it will definitely work.”

The dog was very impressed with the fox. After all, he didn’t have many tricks for advertising danger and so he said, “I only have one trick to run away from danger. I wish I was as clever as you so that I could use these tricks as well.” This definitely lifted the spirit of the fox and he said, “Don’t worry dog. I will definitely teach you some of the tricks.” So, the dog was very happy.


Danger Approaches the Duo 

As they were talking with each other, suddenly they heard footsteps and loud roars. Both the fox and the dog understood that lions had come to the forest in order to hunt for food. Seeing that they were in danger, the dog leapt into some of the bushes and hid beneath the thickest ones. He whispered to the fox, “This is the trick that I was talking about. Which trick are you going to use to save yourself from the lion?” Saying that he hid behind the bushes so that no one could see him.


The Fox Starts to Think 

Seeing the approaching danger, the fox started to count his tricks and plans. The moment he would choose a trick to save himself, he was reminded of another which was far better and would surely work. So, as he was trying to make up his mind about which trick to use, he didn’t realise that the lions had actually come very close. In his quest to find the perfect plan from so many options, the fox ultimately became the lions' dinner.

The dog and the fox story explains the importance of having a reliable solution in times of trouble. The dog only had a single plan to save himself and hence he used that and got out of trouble.
