The Foolish Monkeys and the Firefly Story

On a cold winter night, there was a group of monkeys who were trying to search for some fire so that they could get some comfort from the cold. As they were searching, their eyes fell upon a shiny, glowing firefly. Not knowing what it was, the monkeys assumed that it was fire since it shone in the dark. One of the younger monkeys then went and caught the firefly.

Pretty soon the monkeys started to blow at the poor firefly thinking that it would help in lighting a fire and they could finally have some heat. But alas! The firefly was anything but fire. So, the monkeys just kept on trying without any results.

The Bird’s Advice to the Monkeys

As the monkeys were blowing at the firefly, a bird saw what they were doing and was amused by their foolishness. Seeing that they were being silly, the bird flew near them and said, “Silly monkeys! It is definitely not fire that you are blowing at, it is a firefly. You will not be able to get any fire from it. I would suggest that you go ahead and find some shelter in a cave nearby.” It was surely a solid piece of advice from someone who was wiser than the monkeys. But the monkeys didn’t pay any heed to the bird’s advice and kept with their antics.

But can someone actually build a fire from a firefly, which is an insect? Absolutely not, right? So, the monkeys were just working hard on something that would bear no fruit. Pretty soon the monkeys became very tired and it was cold as well. Now they finally realized what the bird said was actually true. They felt very foolish and let the firefly go. The firefly then flew and joined its group. As for the monkeys, they decided to take the advice of the bird and went to a nearby cave where they stayed till the night was over. Thus, the monkeys were able to save themselves from the cold by taking the advice of some wiser.

Moral of the Story on Fools: What Did You Learn?

Well, just like any other story, there is a very interesting moral hidden behind this one. The story teaches us that while hard work and persistence are rewarded, we can always learn some new things in the process. It is always better to take sound advice and listen to our elders who are wiser than us.
