RD Sharma Class 9 Solutions Chapter 3

‘Rationalization’ is Chapter 3 of Class 9. In this chapter, students will learn about the process of rationalization. A rationalisation is basically a process by which radicals in the denominator of a fraction are eliminated. In this chapter, students will learn how to simplify algebraic expressions with the help of algebraic identities. The rationalisation is one of the most important topics for Class 9. This is about different Algebraic identities and rationalisation of the denominator. Students will understand that Rationalization is directly related to algebra. Rationalization is the type of process that finds application in elementary algebra, where it is used to eliminate or simplify the irrational number in the denominator. There are so many rationalizing techniques that are used to rationalize the denominator. Rationalizing means making the equation reduced into its more effective and simpler form.

Students will get to know that Rationalization refers to the process of removing the radicals in a fraction so that the denominator will only contain a rational number. Basically a radical is an expression that uses a root, such as a cube root, square root. For example, an expression of the form: (a+b) is radical. In this chapter, students can learn about different sections like Rational numbers, Irrational numbers, Radical, Fractions,  Algebraic identities, Algebraic equations and Rationalizing numerators and denominators.

Below are the general steps to be followed to rationalize the denominator in a fraction:

Step 1: Multiply the numerator and denominator by an appropriate radical that will remove the radicals in the denominator.

Step 2: Make sure all irrational numbers in the fraction are in simplified form.

Step 3: You can simplify the fraction furthermore if needed.
