Complete answer: Berlin Wall was built on 13 Aug 1961 which was commenced by the German Democratic Republic. The wall divided West Berlin from surrounding East Germany including East Berlin. These barriers were equipped with guard towers, large concrete walls, accompanied by a wide area that contained anti-vehicle trenches, beds of nails, and other defenses. The wall was demolished on 9th Nov 1989.
The wall was a total length of 155 km and a height of 3.6m. There were a total of 302 watchtowers and 20 bunkers. The GDR authority officially referred to the Berlin Wall. Sometimes it is also referred to as 'Wall of Shame'. This wall was also referred to as the 'Iron Curtain' that separated Western Europe and the Eastern bloc during the World War.
In 1989, a series of revolutions occurred in nearby Poland and Hungary, particularly that resulted in a chain reaction in East Germany that ultimately resulted in the destruction of the Wall. The demolition of the Wall officially started in 1990 and ended in 1991. The way of German reunification was paved after the fall of the Berlin Wall which formally took place on 3 Oct 1990.
