The female reproductive system is shaped to perform different functions. It creates egg cells known as ova which are important for reproduction. The reproductive system is organised to deliver the ova to the site of fertilization. Fertilization of egg takes place in the fallopian tube along with the sperm. Next step of fertilization is implantation in the wall of the uterus and initiation of pregnancy stages. Female reproductive system is also involved in the production of female sex hormones to maintain the reproductive cycle.

Female reproductive system consists of a pair of ovaries alongwith oviducts, vagina, cervix, uterus, and the external genitalia which are located in the pelvic region. These reproductive parts with a pair of mammary glands are integrated both functionally and structurally and support the process of ovulation, fertilization, birth of child, and finally care.
- Vagina is a muscular tube that receives the male genitalia during intercourse and from where the new born leaves the uterus during parturition.
- Uterus is the organ which nourishes and holds the foetus which is under development while the eggs get fertilized. While ovaries are the female gonads and when it gets mature it is released down inside the fallopian tube.
- Fallopian tube involves in the transportation of ova from the ovaries to the uterus and where the gg either gets fertilized or is related to menstruation. Fallopian cells have cell lines which consist of small hair-like projections considered as cilia which allow movement of ovum to the uterus, therefore, the passage of ova through the female reproductive tract is because of ciliary movement.
- During the reproduction process, fertilization takes place in which male sperm and female eggs get fused to form zygote which develops into foetus inside the uterus.

Note: Foetus is formed only when the ovaries get fertilised by the sperm. Female bodies release ova to the uterus every month where they wait to get fertilized if eggs do not get fertilized they are released or diffused and come out as blood that is termed as menstrual cycle.
