Chapter 7 – Weather, Climate and Adaptations Animals to Climate - A Brief Summarisation of Chapter 7

Introduction

Have you ever visited a hill station with your family and friends? It must have been a great experience for sure. How was the weather there, cold or humid? What climatic changes did you notice there? You must have carried some warm clothes with you. Have you ever wondered what the terms climate and weather actually mean? In this chapter, we shall learn in detail about the weather and climate of different places and how various living beings adapt to the climate of their natural habitats.

7.1 Weather

Do you read newspapers at home or watch news channels with your father? You must have noticed the weather report that is conveyed to people in the newspaper every morning. It tells about temperature, humidity, and rainfall during the past 24 hours as well as predicts the weather of the present day.

So, this tells us that the day-to-day conditions of the atmosphere of any place in terms of temperature, humidity, rainfall, wind speed, etc. is known as the weather of that particular place. There are various elements of weather. In this section, you shall learn in detail about weather and its elements. Make sure you read weather reports in the newspaper every day for a better understanding of new terms.

7.2 Climate

The average weather pattern that is taken over a long time, maybe for 25 years or so, is called the climate of the place. Let us understand with an example.

My friend Neha lives in Rajasthan, whereas, I live in Manali. I have often listened to my friend complaining about the extremely hot climate of Rajasthan during the months of May and June. On the other hand, in my native town, Manali, the climate is cold during the months of May and June.

So, when the temperature of any place remains high most of the time, then we can say that the climate of that particular place is hot, whereas if there is heavy rainfall at other times in the same place, we can say that the climate of the place is hot and wet. Read this section in detail to understand it more efficiently.

7.3 Climate and Adaptation

The climate of any place has a profound effect on all the living organisms of that particular place. Humans, animals, and plants living in extremely cold or hot climatic conditions possess special features to protect themselves against extreme climatic conditions. In this section, you shall learn about the adaptation of animals to certain habitats.

(i) The Polar Region

The polar region has extreme climatic conditions and is usually covered with snow that makes it extremely cold. All the animals living in polar regions have adapted themselves to the extreme climatic conditions of the place. Polar bears have thick white fur that protects them from the extreme climatic conditions of the place.

On warm days, polar bears go swimming as they have wide and large paws that not only make them good swimmers but also help them to walk easily on snow. Just like polar bears, penguins have also adapted well to extreme climatic conditions. In this chapter, you shall read in detail about the animals living in polar regions, their special features, and their adaptation to their natural habitats.

(ii) The Tropical Rainforests

A tropical region is situated near the equator, hence has extremely hot climatic conditions. During summers, the temperature here might cross 40 degrees Celsius, whereas days and nights are always equal in length. Monkeys, apes, lizards, leopards, elephants, and tigers are the major animals living in this area. In this section, you shall learn in detail about the animals living in regions near the equator and the manner they adjust themselves to extreme climatic conditions of the area.
