ICSE Class 9 French Syllabus 2024-25 Examinations

Exam Paper Pattern as Per Class 9 ICSE French Syllabus

The paper is of 3 hours and carries 80 marks. 20 Marks will be for internal assessment. The sections in the French paper are:

• Composition- Students will be required to write a short composition in French on a topic that they can choose from the varied options given

• Letter Writing- They will be required to write a formal/informal letter with address, introduction, etc. They will be tested on their presentation of the matter and the layout

• Comprehension- An unseen passage will be given for 150 words and students will be required to answer questions based on that in the foreign language. This section tests the ability of the students to understand the language. 

• Grammar- This part has questions to test the vocabulary, syntax, idioms, etc.

Translation and /or Dialogue writing- Students will be provided with a passage for translation from English to French and another translation from French to English. They will be required to write a dialogue of 150 words in the language.

ICSE prepares its syllabus to provide the students with all the necessary information regarding the exams and overall assessment. This is done to ensure that students are well informed and can prepare accordingly. Following are the important points mentioned in ICSE Class 9 French Syllabus:

• Aims: The official syllabus begins with 8 important points enlisting the aims of the ICSE for teaching Modern Languages to its students.  This includes developing various language skills like reading, writing, listening, communicating etc. several other important objectives are mentioned in this section.

• Exam Pattern Details: this is the most important part of the syllabus which the students most eagerly await. This section provides a detailed overview of the upcoming exam pattern for the exams. This section gives a detailed analysis of the duration of the exam paper, different topics asked in the composition, letter, comprehension, grammar section, and dialogue writing. 

• Internal Assessment Details: the syllabus then goes on to mention the details of the internal assessment. As mentioned in the syllabus 80 marks are allotted for the written examination. • Listening Skills: students are expected to answer objective type questions after the examiner reads a 300 long word passage twice.

• Speaking Skills: students need to present an oral presentation on a topic. 

• Creative Writing Skills: students are expected to write short compositions for this part of the assignment. 

• Suggested Assignments: the suggested assignments are also based on the following three aspects:

• Aural: this part of the assignment is based on the student listening to a piece of given conversation, talk or reading of a passage. The students are then required to write down the main points from the piece and answer a few questions based on the same.

• Oral: students must prepare a short speech, debate, discussion, or impromptu speech as part of the oral assignment.

• Creative Writing: As per the suggested oral assignments by ICSE for Class 9 French, students are expected to write short compositions.

• Evaluation: The evaluation scheme is also mentioned in detail in the ICSE Class 9 French Syllabus. As per the evaluation scheme, there will be a joint assessment by the teacher and external examiner. The assessment of the subject teacher and the external examiner will each carry 10 marks making the internal assessment of 20 marks in total.

• Guidelines for Marking: Lastly, the syllabus gives a detailed overview of the marking guidelines for the following:

• Aural Assignment: based on the understanding and comprehension of the main idea, recall, vocabulary, context, etc. 

• Oral Assignment: based on fluency, subject matter, organization, vocabulary, delivery, understanding, gestures, etc.

• Creative Writing: based on content, structure, originality, expression, vocabulary, etc.
