When a term refers to one person, location, animal, bird, or thing, it is said to be singular; when it refers to multiple people, places, animals, birds, or things, it is said to be plural. Singular:

Naming words can be used to indicate a specific thing's name. When there is only one of the naming words, it is said to be in the singular form.


Example: Book, Table, Bag, Bear, Spoon, etc.


Plural:

When naming words that there is more than one of a particular thing, it is said to be in plural form.


Examples: Books, Tables, Bags, Bears, Spoons, etc.

Rules for Converting Singular to Plural:

When making a singular noun plural, there are some fundamental guidelines to keep in mind.


  • To become plural, most singular nouns require an's' at the end.

  • To make singular nouns that end in s, ss, sh, ch, x, or z plural, add a 'es' at the end.

  • A few words have identical singular and plural forms.

  • To make some nouns plural that finish in "f," you must turn the "f" to a "v" and then add "es" at the end.

  • To make nouns plural that end in "y," you frequently need to turn the "y" to a I and then add "es" at the end.
