ICSE Class 9 French Syllabus 2024-25

Before beginning exam preparation, it is always critical to have a thorough understanding of the syllabus. There will be one three-hour paper worth 80 points and one 20-point internal assessment.

1. Composition 

Students are required to write one short composition in French, which may include brief explanations, directions, descriptions, or narratives. There will be various subjects to choose from, which may be suggested by language.


2. Letter 

Students will be required to write a letter in either a formal or informal format.

Suggestions are welcome. The layout of the letter, including the address, introduction, conclusion, and so on, will be evaluated.


3. Understanding

A 150-word unseen passage in French will be provided. There will be Questions based on the given passage which will be assigned and answered in French to assess the student's comprehension of the passage's content.


4. Grammar

This will include tests in vocabulary, syntax, and idiom, such as sentence synthesis and the formation of sentences in French that correctly embody given words or forms. The question will not necessitate a thorough understanding of grammatical definitions. The grammar questions has the  following:

Grammaire has  Articles (définis, indéfinis. contractés, partitifs),  


Adjectifs (démonstratifs, possessifs, qualificatifs, interrogatifs),  


Interrogative,  


Négation (ne ... pas, ne ... rien, ne ... personne, ne ... plus, etc.),  


Pronouns (sujet, COI, COI, quantité, lieu, relative),  


Propositions, Tenses (présent, imparfait, passé composé, futur simple, passé récent, futur simple, verbes pronominaux, impératif),


Comparaison (plus de ... que, moins de ... que, plus de / moins de + nombre),  Superlative (Ie plus .. ./le moins …) 


Conjugation exercises (for testing verbs),


gap-filling (for testing articles, pronouns, prepositions), 


correcting errors (for testing adjectives, negation, comparative, etc.), 


Making questions and negative sentences, correcting jumbled sentences,  


Translation and/or Dialogue Writing,  


One short passage will be set aside for translation from French to English.

  • One passage will be translated from English to French.

  • Dialogue writing (around 150 words) based on real-life situations Hints may be provided.
