This subject aims to provide a basic understanding of how the Indian government works and make the student into a responsible citizen. The History subject aims to make the student understand historical evolution for a proper view of contemporary India. To make the students realize how people from various streams contributed to the development of the country.

The entire exam has one paper to be written in 2 hours. The entire paper is of 80 marks and the rest 20 marks are awarded in internal assessment. Part I of the paper contains short answer questions with 30 marks from the entire syllabus. Part - II of the paper has two sections A and B. Students have to answer 2 out of 3 questions from Section - A and three out of 5 questions from Section - B. now let us look at the components of the syllabus:

Concepts under Section - A (Civics):

  • Union legislature

Meaning of federal set-up, Rajya Sabha, Lok Sabha, powers of a Union Parliament, exclusive powers of the two houses.


  • The union executive

The President, Vice - president, The Prime minister of India and the council of ministers. How are they elected? What is their term of office? What are their qualifications? How are they impeached? Are discussed in this segment.


  • The judiciary

The supreme court, high courts and the subordinate courts, what are their functions, composition, how are the judges appointed and impeached are dealt with in this segment.


Concepts under Section - B (History):

  • The Indian national movement (1857-1917)

The first war of independence, what are the factors that lead to the growth of nationalism in India, the first phase of the Indian National movement (1885-1907), the second phase of the Indian National Movement (1905-1916) are dealt with comprehensively in this chapter.


  • Mass phase if national movement(1917-1947)

Mahatma Gandhi, forward bloc and INA, Independence and partition of India are dealt with in this chapter.


  • The Contemporary World

World wars, the Rise of Dictatorships, the United Nations, Non - Aligned Movement are dealt with in this chapter.


Internal  Assignment and Evaluation:

 Anyone project/assignment related to the syllabus should be done. Following are some suggestions for your project:

  • Comparing Indian parliament with other forms of government

  • Conduct a mock court/ model UN and record the proceedings

  • Present a sketch on contributions of any great leaders 

  • Present a book review related to your syllabus 

  • Prepare a presentation on the contribution of any multilateral institution.

  • Case study on any recent human rights violation

The total marks of internal assessment are divided between the subject teacher and the external examiner. Each will award 10 marks respectively. They are carefully recorded by the head of the school and sent to the council. The external examiner is selected by the head of the school from their respective schools.

Maximum of 4 marks are awarded based on the student’s performance in the internal assessment. Students are given grades - I, II, III, IV respectively based on their performance. Various parameters like the ability to present, objectivity, communication skills will be assessed by the examiner. Assessment is done by an internal and external examiner appointed by the head of the school. He can be selected from the same school. all the internal assessment marks are to be noted carefully and to be made a copy. The head of the school has to post them to the council for the end result. Full Marks are not awarded in the internal assessment. However, students can try to get maximum marks by making their assignments as interactive as possible. They can draw examples from various sources. The credibility of the references is also tested in internal assessment.

5. Does the history component contain World history?

Yes, the history component has some concepts related to World history but it is not dealt with in-depth.
