Students who opted for a modern foreign language in Group - I may not opt the same in Group - II and Group - III as modern foreign languages. The entire exam pattern is divided into external assessment worth 80 marks that is to be written in 3 hours and internal assessment worth 20 marks. It is held within the student’s school by their faculty. Let us look at the exam pattern and skills tested.


Exam Pattern for ICSE class IX and X (German):

  1. Comprehension:

An unseen passage of 150 words will be given in German. Students have to read it carefully and answer the questions given below. This segment tests how far a student can understand the language and reply.


  1. Grammar:

This segment tests vocabulary, syntax and idioms etc., for example, students might be asked to form a sentence in German correctly with the help of given words. Detailed knowledge of German grammar is not required. Various components of this segment include:

  • Verb conjugation in Singular 

  • Verb- “Haben”  

  • Reflexive Verbs

  • Indefinite verbs

  • Imperativ 

  • Verbs in Singular

  1. Dialogue writing/ translation:

  • One short passage to be translated from German to English.

  • One short passage to be translated from English to German.

  • Dialogue writing is based on daily life events for which hints might be given. Around 150 words are to be written in dialogue writing.


  1. Composition:

Students will be required to write a short composition in German. It may include describing an event, object, giving direction, explaining a situation. Examiner might use a photo or painting as a prop and ask the student to describe it.


  1. Letter: 

Students are given a choice between formal and informal letters. They will be given hints to write the letter. The layout of the letter, introduction, conclusion etc., are tested in this segment.


Internal Assessment Pattern - 20 marks:

  • Speaking skills:

Each student has to make an oral presentation for 2 minutes and discuss the same topic with the examiner for 3 minutes. It is recommended that the students be given an hour to prepare for it and a choice to pick their topic from all the common topics. Students can carry a brief note but are not allowed to use it often. Topics may range from describing an event or image to expressing their opinion on an issue.


  • Creative writing skills:

Students have to write a short composition based on their respective assignments.


  • Listening skills:

The examiner will read out a passage of around 300 words twice. The students can make a brief note of it. They have to answer the objective answers given in the question paper that is related to the passage read out by the examiner.


Internal Assessment Evaluation:

The subject teacher and an external examiner will jointly assess the student. 10 marks are assessed by each. The external examiner is selected by the head of the school from the same school. The head of the school has to carefully fill in the marks in the sheet and send it to the council. Schools are required to maintain a record of all the assessment marks.

They can take help of their class notes and reference books while making assignments.

3. How many marks are allotted to listening and speaking skills?

5 marks are allotted to listening and speaking skills respectively in the internal assessment exam. Under listening skills, the examiner will read out a passage of around 300 words twice. The students can make a brief note of it. They have to answer the objective answers given in the question paper that is related to the passage read out by the examiner. Under the speaking skills, each student has to make an oral presentation for 2 minutes and discuss the same topic with the examiner for 3 minutes. It is recommended that the students be given an hour to prepare for it and a choice to pick their topic from all the common topics. Students can carry a brief note but are not allowed to use it often. Topics may range from describing an event or image to expressing their opinion on an issue.
