Reading

Two Unseen Passages and a Poem

12 out of 15 questions from a literary or discursive passage of about 950-1000words.

8 questions to test interpretation and appreciation of a poem of about 10-12 lines.

Section B

Creative Writing Skills

An Essay on an argumentative/discursive/reflective/descriptive topic, leading tocreative rendering, forming and defending of opinions, to be answered in 120-150 words.

This section will have variety of assessment items including Multiple Choice Questions, Objective Type Questions, Short Answer Type Questions and Long Answer Type Questions to assess comprehension, analysis, interpretation and extrapolation beyond the text.

Seminar (20 Marks)

  • Presentation - book review /a play /a short story/a novel/novella (tale, table, and  parable) to be followed by a question-answer session.

  • Poetry reading to be followed by interpretative tasks based  on  close  reading  and  literary analysis of the text.

  • Critical review of a film/ documentary or a play.

  • Conducting a theatre workshop to be followed by a discussion

Note: Teachers may develop their own rubrics to assess the performance of students objectively.

1. What Types of Questions are Asked from the Literature Textbooks in the Examinations?

The English question paper is divided into three sections:

  • Section A- Reading(20 marks)

  • Section B- Writing(20 marks)

  • Section C- Literature(40 marks)

The literature section is the section with the highest weightage. The types of questions asked in the Literature section are as follows:


A. Woven words-

  1. 8 objective types of questions of one mark each to test the understanding and comprehension skills.

  2. Three questions(Out of four) X 2 marks each.

  3. One question ( Out of two) X 6 marks.


B. Drama-


Two long answer type questions (Out of three) X 5 marks each to test analytical response and understanding of character sketches, events, and themes.


C. Fiction-

  1. Two short answer-type questions (Out of three) X 2 marks each.

  2. One long answer type question (Out of two) X 6 marks to test character understanding and appreciation.

2. How Can Students Prepare for the Class 11 English Examination?

Students preparing for their examinations should plan their preparations well. It is advisable to go through each chapter from Hornbill and Snapshots thoroughly to get an in-depth understanding of the theme, characters, and premise. This will help students in scoring well in the literature section. Practice unseen passages from previous year’s question papers available at Vedantu and sample papers to score well in the reading section. Students will have to answer questions from the given paragraph itself. The questions asked will be objective type and very short answer type.


To score well in the writing section, prepare different types of questions as prescribed in the syllabus such as article writing, speech writing, dialogue writing which are both argumentative and creative in nature.

3. What is the significance of the CBSE Syllabus for Class 11 English Elective Term (1 & 2) 2024-25?

The course is designed to provide students with a high level of English proficiency, with a focus on literary literature. The course will expose students to a wide range of rich global literary works as well as Indian writings in English, including classics. cultivate awareness to the imaginative and creative. Give children a taste for reading with joy and discernment by teaching them to utilise English. The course is free of charge. The course is primarily aimed to prepare students for further study in English literature and the English language. At the collegiate level, language is taught.

4. How to write a conclusion of a chapter in your own words?

The final piece of writing in a research paper, essay, or article that summarises the entire effort is the conclusion. A conclusion paragraph's objective is to tie up your work and emphasise the major topic given in the body of your paper.
