Fisherman Story

The fisherman could hardly afford to support his family including his wife and three children. Every day he went fishing early and he made a rule each day to not throw his net into the river more than four times. One morning he started by moonlight and then came near the sea shore. After undressing, he threw his nets and when he started drawing them towards the bank of the river, he felt a weight. The fisherman thought that he had caught a large fish and he was very elated. After a moment, he saw that there was no fish but he only had a carcass of an ass on his nets, he became very disappointed.

He was very sad after having such a bad haul. The fisherman had mended his nets which the carcass of the ass had broken in several places. He threw the net for a second time. When he was drawing the net towards the bank of the river, he again felt a great weight. He thought that the net was full of fish. However, to his surprise, he found a basket that was full of rubbish. The fisherman was disappointed again. The fisherman prayed for the fortune to not trifle with the fisherman who could hardly support his family. The fisherman threw the rubbish and washed his nets. This time the fishman drew in shells, mud, and stone. The fisherman was in despair.

With a lot of courage, the fisherman threw his net for the fourth time. The fisherman again thought that he finally caught fish. However, there was no fish and the fisherman found a yellow pot that was full of something. The fisherman noticed that the yellow pot was sealed and fastened with lead and had the impression of a seal. The fisherman was very delighted and thought that he would sell it to the founder. He thought that he would buy wheat with whatever he would get in return.

The fisherman examined the pot on all sides and then shook it to see if the pot would rattle. He heard nothing. He judged from the impression of the seal and the lid. He thought that there was something precious inside the yellow pot. The fisherman opened the yellow pot with his knife. He turned the pot upside down and nothing came out. The fisherman was very surprised. The fisherman set the pot in front of him and while he was looking at the pot attentively, there was a thick smoke that came out of the pot and he had to step back. This smoke rose to the clouds and it stretched over the sea shore and formed a mist. This caused the fisherman much astonishment. When all of the smoke was out of the jar, it became a thick mass in which there was a genie who appeared who was twice as large as a giant. When the fisherman saw such a monster, the fisherman wanted to run away but he was so afraid that he could not move a step forward.

The fisherman asked the genie to explain where he came from and how he was shut up in that vase. The genie told the fisherman to talk to him more haughtily, failing which he would kill him. The fisherman cried and asked the genie if he had forgotten the favour that the fisherman had just done. The genie told the fisherman that he would only grant one favour to the fisherman and that would be to allow him to decide in which manner he wanted to be killed.

The genie told the fisherman that he rebelled against the king of the genii. To punish him, the king had shut him up in the vase of copper and had put a cover on the seal which was enchanted to prevent him from coming out. During the first period of his captivity, the genie had vowed that if anyone freed him before hundred years had passed, the genie would make him rich after his death. However, no one came to help the genie and the century passed. In the second century, the genie had vowed that he would give all the treasures to his deliverer but no one came. In the third century, the genie had decided to make his deliverer a king and had decided to grant him three wishes every day. No one came in that century. The genie told the fisherman that at last he became very angry and decided that whoever would free him, he would kill the person at once. The fisherman was very sad.

The fisherman told the genie that he still couldn't believe that the vase contained the genie. The fisherman told the genie that he would not be able to believe this until the genie showed him how he was inside the vase. The genie began to change himself into the smoke, spread itself over the sea shore, and then collected itself together to go back into the vase slowly. The fisherman took the lid and shut the vase immediately. The fisherman told the genie that he would build a house on the shore to warn another fisherman against fishing up such a genie who vowed to kill the man who freed him. The fisherman saved his life by using his wit at last.
