Who is Akrura?

Akrura was born to Shwalpaka and Nandini. According to Mahabharat, he was the commander of the Yadava army. Although he worked as a minister of king Kansa, Akrura was also related to Krishna as he was his maternal uncle and devotee, yet the fear of Kansa kept him away from his lord and his blessings.

Akrura’s Meeting with Krishna

Krishna was a living threat to Kansa’s life. Despite Kansa’s several attempts, he failed to kill Krishna. Once, he asked Akrura to escort Krishna and Balrama to Mathura on the occasion of the bow ceremony, hoping he would succeed this time. This was a blessing in disguise for Akrura; he was finally getting a chance to meet his lord.

On his way to Vrindavan, Akrura saw Krishna’s footprints on the sand. He was so overwhelmed with joy that he started rolling himself in it. On reaching his lord’s house, he was stunned to see him in all his glory. He marvels at Krishna’s hospitality towards his devotees. He not only blesses them by fulfilling their desires but also by offering himself to them.

On their way to Mathura, Akrura cautioned Krishna and Balrama to be careful as he left for his ceremonial bath in the river Yamuna. As he dipped his head in the water, he had visions of divine forms of Krishna and Balrama while simultaneously perceiving them in his chariot.

This bewildering experience makes him feel like he is hallucinating. He again dips his head in the water, only to see Krishna in his divine form. He returns to the chariot feeling blessed to have a vision of god in his grand form. Akrura then continues his journey taking Krishna and Balrama to Mathura.
