## What is an Algebraic Expression

An algebraic expression is an expression that consists of one or more variables (such as x,y,z, etc), constants, or both, along with algebraic operations (eg - addition, multiplication, division).

On the basis of the number of variables, an algebraic expression can be divided mainly into three types:

• Monomial Expression: This type of expression has only one variable in the whole expression. Eg-  2x + 4 = 9 (only variable is x)

3x - 2 =5 ( only variable is y)

• Binomial Expression: This type of expression has two different variables in the same expression.  Eg-  5x + 3y = 2 (variables are x and y)

6q + p = 1  (variables are p and q)

• Polynomial Expression: Algebraic expressions containing more than two variables or different powers of the same variable are called polynomial expressions.

Eg- x2 + x - 12 = 0   x2+x-12=0

3x + 2y - z =7

### Other Types of Expression

Aside from monomial, binomial, and polynomial types of expressions (which were based on the number of variables), an algebraic expression can also be classified into two other types which are:

• Numeric Expression

• Variable Expression

Numeric Expression - A numeric expression is an expression that consists of numbers and operations, but does not have any variables. Some of the examples of numeric expressions are 19 + 6,  9 ÷ 2, etc.

Variable Expression - A variable expression is an expression that contains the variables along with the numbers and the operations to define an expression. A few examples of a variable expression include 4a-b, 5ab + 33, etc.

So the weight of Ram will be 2x. So according to our condition, our algebraic expression will be :

x + 2x = 120

Two algebraic expressions are needed to solve a binomial expression as the number of variables present in a binomial expression is two. The number of expressions needed is directly proportional to no of variables in the expression. For example - if in an algebraic expression, four variables are present then four different algebraic expressions will be needed to get the value of all variables.
