FAQs on RD Sharma Class 10 Solutions Chapter 14 - Exercise 14.5
1. What are coordinate geometry and coordinate plane?
Coordinate geometry is often described as the branch of mathematics, which is beneficial in presenting the geometric figures for a 2-dimensional plane and in finding out the properties of such figures. A Cartesian or coordinate plane divides the plane space into 2-dimensions and is useful to easily locate points in this plane. The coordinate plane has two axes, the horizontal x-axis and the vertical y-axis. These coordinate axes divide the plane into four parts called quadrants, and the point of intersection of these axes is the origin (0, 0).
2. What are the coordinates of a point?
A coordinate can be defined as that particular place in space that helps to locate a point. For a 2-dimensional space, the coordinates of a point are (x, y). Students need to understand two important terms related to this-
Abscissa: It is the x value in the point (x, y), and the distance of this point along the x-axis from the origin.
Ordinate: It is the y value in the point (x, y) which is placed at a perpendicular distance from the point on x-axis i.e. it is parallel to the y-axis.
The coordinates of a point are useful to perform numerous operations such as finding distance, equation of a line, midpoint, the slope of a line etc.
3. What is a quadrant?
A quadrant can be defined as the region or part of a Cartesian plane which is obtained when two axes intersect each other and this can be used to find out the position of a given point on the plane. In coordinate geometry, a Cartesian plane has 4 parts separated by a vertical line called y-axis and a horizontal line called x-axis. It should be noted that the quadrants are always numbered in an anti-clockwise direction.
