Hint: Cathode ray, stream of electrons leaving the negative electrode (cathode) in a discharge tube containing a gas at low pressure, or electrons emitted by a heated filament in certain electron tubes.
Complete step by step answer:
As we know, a cathode ray is a beam of electrons in a vacuum tube travelling from the negatively charged electrode (cathode) at one end to the positively charged electrode (anode) at the other, across a voltage difference between the electrodes. They are also called electron beams. These electron beams are generated by the thermionic emission or heat or by strong electric field and as well by the bombardment of the charged atoms.
These are five properties of cathode rays:-
1. They travel in a straight line from cathode and cast shadows of metallic objects placed in their path.
2. They cause mechanical motion of small pin-wheel placed in their path, they possess kinetic energy and must be the material particles.
3. They produce fluorescence when they strike the glass wall to the discharge tube.
4. When they strike metal foil, it becomes red and starts glowing.
5. They produce X – rays when they strike a metallic target.
Note:
A cathode ray tube is a device that uses a beam of electrons in order to produce an image on screen cathode ray tubes, also known as CRTS, are widely used in a number of electrical devices. Such as computer screens, television sets, radar screens used for scientific and medical purposes.
