Hint: The Kandariya Mahadev temple constructed in 999 is dedicated to Shiva. It was built by the king Dhangadeva of the Chandela dynasty. It is one of the tallest and largest temples of Khajuraho.

The Kandariya Mahadev temple is famous for its magnificent structure. The temple is built at 4 metre height in the shape of a mountain, which is symbolic of mount meru which is said to be the source of creation of the world. The temple is built on a raised platform facing east. It can be reached by steps. The temple has many chambers which are interconnected and can be visited in sequence. The rectangular central hall, Ardhamandapa leads to the central pillar hall known as mandapa. The main hall which is known as, maha mandapa where dances were performed. Garbhagriha is a special and main shrine where the image of chief deity is kept. It is also the place for the ritual worship only for the king and his immediate family and priests. The temple also has royal temples where commoners were not allowed. The temples were decorated with beautiful carved sculptures.
