Hint- Electrolytic reduction method is a process used in extraction of less reactive metals. They are reduced at cathode by accepting electrons & get deposited, we can also use this process for electroplating. Or we say It is the method of reducing metals by the process of electrolysis.

In this method of electrolysis electric current is passed through the molten state of metal ores. Metal; being positively charged; is deposited over the cathode (It is the method of reducing metals with the help of electrolysis).
The electrolytic reduction is a type of electrolysis. The oxides, hydroxide and chlorides of metals in fused state are electrically reduced by using this method. The metals are extracted at the cathode.
Some metals like Na, K, Mg, Ca, are obtained by this process. This method assures purity of metals obtained.
Highly electropositive metals Na,K,Ca,Al and Mg are extracted by electrolytic reduction. Au and Ag metals are extracted by hydrometallurgy
While Cu is extracted by pyrometallurgy.

We say Aluminium is extracted by electrolytic reduction method. In electro-refining method, impure metal is taken as anode and pure metal is made of cathode. The electrodes are placed in acidified aqueous solution of metal salt or molten metal salt. On electrolysis, the metal in anode dissolves into the solution and gets deposited over the cathode. The residue left below the anode in the electro-refining of metal is called anode mud. Aluminum metal obtained by the electrolysis of fused alumina is about 99.5% pure. It can be further refined by Hooper's electrolytic process.
