Hint: Carbon dioxide is a colourless and odourless gas in which a Carbon atom is bonded to two Oxygen atoms through covalent bonds. We are required to test the presence of Carbon dioxide. We can test the presence of carbon dioxide by a few reactions. We will see those reactions and understand the process behind it.
Complete answer:
The most common test to detect carbon dioxide is the Lime water test. Lime water is a solution of Calcium hydroxide. It is clear and colourless. When Carbon dioxide is bubbled through lime water it changes the colour of lime water to cloudy white which is commonly said milky. let’s see the reaction to understand it better
\[Ca{(OH)_{2(aq)}} + C{O_{2(g)}} \to CaC{O_{3(s)}} + {H_2}{O_{(l)}}\]
In the above reaction we can see that Lime water is reacting with Carbon Dioxide to form Calcium carbonate and water. The colour of lime water changes due to the formation of milky white precipitate of Calcium carbonate which is insoluble in water.
Another test for detecting Carbon oxide is if we lit a splint and put it in a test tube containing Carbon dioxide the flame goes out immediately in the presence of Carbon Dioxide.
Note:
Carbon dioxide is a very common gas. It is mostly found in earth’s atmosphere; it is also a greenhouse responsible for the greenhouse effect. Dry ice is a solid form of carbon dioxide. We breathe out oxygen every day. Doctors say that it is necessary to have a sufficient amount of carbon dioxide in our body. Having less or more than sufficient amounts causes imbalance in our body.
