Hint: Gestation period is the time where the embryo undergoes development. It is the period from the beginning of fertilization to birth of the animal.

Complete answer:
In animals once the fertilization complete and the embryo form, from that period to birth the embryo undergo so many developmental changes and this period is said to be gestation period

- This gestation is completely different from mammals to non mammals

- In mammals gestation periods begin once the fertilized zygote is implanted in the uterus and ends once it comes out.

- This period is different in different animals
For example in dogs gestation period varies from 56 to 61 day and in elephant it is up to 645 days
In humans it is up to 280 days

- In humans gestation period is mainly divided into three periods called as trimesters
Whereas each trimester consists of approximately 12 weeks.
Sometimes the gestation period may last for little longer and sometimes it may be little shorter

- When comes to non mammals the gestation is different

- In no mammals gestation is completely different and they are again divided into viviparous and ovoviviparous

- In viviparous the embryo is formed inside the mother later it will be pushed outside and mother gives live birth.

- Whereas ovoviviparous animals are different means they develop within the egg and remain in the body of the mother but here the embryos are nourished by the egg yolks, not by the body of the mother.

Note: The important points to remember about the gestation period of some frequently asked mammals such as humans and elephants and some other mammals.
