Hint: Deafness is the condition in which there is impossibility of hearing any kind of sound. There are so many causes that can lead to deafness and loss of hearing. There are three parts of the ear if we divide it anatomically, outer ear, middle ear and inner ear. All the parts help in the transmission of the sounds.
Complete answer:
Outer part of the ear is made up of the pinna and external auditory meatus. Pinna is the visible outer part of the ear that helps in the gathering of sound from the external environment. And then it passes the sound waves through the external auditory meatus.
Then there is a tympanic membrane which acts as a curtain in between the external ear and middle ear. It is called an eardrum. Eardrum vibrates according to sound waves and transmits the vibrations across the middle ear.
Middle ear contains three bones that are maleus, incus and stapes. They transmit the vibrations to the inner ear. Inner ear has two parts which are semicircular canals and the cochlea. It changes the sound waves to electrical signals. And also plays a very important role in balance.
Deafness or hearing loss occurs due to damage to the eardrum that is the pathway in between the external ear and middle ear.
Therefore, the correct statement will be: Deafness is caused due to rupturing of the eardrum (tympanic membrane).
Note:
Deafness or hearing loss may range from temporary to permanent. There are mainly two types of hearing loss that are conductive hearing loss and sensorineural hearing loss. Conductive hearing loss occurs when something prevents the sound waves from reaching the inner ear. And sensorineural hearing loss occurs when there is damage to the inner ear or damage to nerves that carry the signals to the brain.
