Hard structures that form the skeleton are bones. Bone is a living tissue that cumulatively forms the body's skeleton. Bones are a very important part of the body. The shape of humans is mainly because of the bones.
Bones are constructed by mainly two types of tissues:
Compact bone: A hard outer layer that is strong, dense and durable. It contributes about 80 percent of the bone mass of an adult.
Cancellous bone: Cancellous bone tissues consist of a network of trabeculae or rod-like structures. Cancellous bones are less dense, lighter and more flexible than the compact bones.
Functions of bones are:
1. Providing support: Bones act as a framework for the muscle and tissue attachment.
2. Providing protection: Skull and rib cage protect internal organs like brain, lungs, Heart etc. from injury or pressure.
3. Supporting movement: Bones help body movements by acting as points of attachment for muscles and as levers.
4. Acting as mineral storage: Bones serve as a reservoir for elements like phosphorus and calcium, and essential minerals for various cellular activities in the body.
5. Area of blood cell production: Red marrow found within the cavities of certain bones are the areas where the production of blood cells, or hematopoiesis, occurs in the body.
6. As energy storage: Bones act as an energy reservoir as Lipids such as fats are stored in adipose cells of the yellow marrow.

The skeleton's hard structure is bones. Skeleton makes our body erect and gives shape. Functions of bones are providing support, providing protection, supporting movement, acting as mineral storage, acting as an area of blood cell production and acting as energy storage.
