Microfilaments are one of the examples of cytoskeleton. The cytoskeleton is present in the cytoplasm of the cell and helps the cell to attain the shape and the position of organelle is managed by the cytoskeleton. The cytoskeleton also helps in the movements of various vesicles. The microtubules and intermediate filaments are the other examples of the cytoskeleton.
Microfilaments are made up of a proteinaceous structure known as actin. So the polymers of actin make the microfilaments. The F-actin forms microfilaments, the other that is G-actin are not found in bounded form and are found individually. The use of microfilaments is that it helps in cell division, the metaphase arranges the cell on the metaphasic plate and the microfilaments attach it to kinetochores and help in separation of sister chromatids in anaphase. Another use of microfilaments is that myosin (a protein) and actin together help in muscle movement with the help of calcium ions in the sarcoplasmic tubules. They also help in cytoplasmic streaming.

The microfilaments are used to maintain integrity of the cytoplasm and henceforth, of the cell. It is found in two forms, one is bundles and another one is networks. They help to maintain intracellular and intercellular communication. The axon of the neuron is also fixed in its position with the help of actin rings.
