- In angiosperms, generally the male gametophyte completes its early development within the anther.
- Within the anther, there is sporogenous tissue, from which they produce the microsporocytes or pollen mother cells.
- Where as the microsporocytes undergo the two divisions of meiosis and transform microsporocyte cells into haploid microspores of pollen grains
- In general two cells are produced in first division, and after the second division tetrad is produced, and this microspore within the tetrad is surrounded by callose .
- The microspores which are produced by two meiotic divisions later increase very rapidly in volume and undergo a change in shape and maximum growth occur before anteiasis.
- Before they release from the anther, they undergo another division, and this is unequal to produce one vegetative cell and one generative cell.
