1) The first organisation in the Madras Presidency to disconcert for the rights of Indians was the Madras Native Association which was started by the publiciser Gazulu Lakshminarasu Chetty in 1849. This organisation did not survive long enough and was eventually dissolved.
2) In May 1884, M. Veeraraghavachariar, G. Subramania Iyer and P. Anadacharlu introduced the Madras Mahajan Sabha.
3) In September 1885, the Sabha with the Bombay Presidency Association and the Indian Association, sent a delegation to England.

1) The members of the Mahajan Sabha felt the requirement of creating an organization at All India level to liberate the nation from the clasp of British rule and solve the problems of Indians.
2) The members of the sabha expressed the idea very strongly in the conference held at Adyar Theosophical Society which was attended by many chauvinists who materialized it later by introducing The Indian National Congress later.
3) Thus the Sabha has expressed the fundamental rights of the citizens of India such as national freedom and other common social issues for the welfare of our countrymen since 1884. It has developed a very close relationship with the Indian National Congress and its activities since 1920 onwards.
4) Thereupon in 1930, the Sabha organized the Salt Satyagraha movement on 22 April in Madras George Town, Esplanade, High Court and Beach areas. The members of the Sabha were assaulted by the British police.
5) As the Sabha insisted on a legal enquiry about the injustice done towards the persons engaged in the Satyagraha, a three-man commission under the leadership of Justice T.R Ramachandra Iyer has enquired thirty people and presented its report to the government.
