The Project Tiger was initiated by the Government of India during the tenure of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in the year 1973 in April. The initiatives taken under this project is to ensure that any factors leading to the depletion of tiger habitats are limited or reduced. It also sees to it that the damaged habitats of our national animals are repaired to maintain a balance of their ecosystem. The project also works to ensure a viable population of tigers for their economic, scientific, cultural, aesthetic, and ecological values. At present, India is proud to have about 80 percent of the world’s tiger population.
