Hint: there are three types of heat transfer in thermodynamics one is conduction second one is convection and third one is radiation In this question we learn about radiation type heat transfer Thermal radiation, also called infrared radiation can transmit heat through empty space. This electromagnetic radiation of a sort. In the phase of the radiation no mass is exchanged and no medium is needed.

Complete answer:
There are a total three ways in which heat can transfer.
1) Conduction 2) convection 3) radiation
Conduction and the convection need the medium to transfer heat.
Only radiation is different from the other two which can transfer heat from one medium to the other medium in empty space.
Radiation is a heat transfer process that does not depend upon the contact between the heat source, as in case with conduction and convection that depends on the same interaction between the heat source and the heated material.
The thermal radiation also called infrared radiation can transmit heat through empty space.
In the radiation no mass is exchanged and no medium is needed.
For example the heat from the sun or heat emitted from the filament of a light bulb is an example of the radiation.

Additional information:
Conduction: Conduction is the process of the transmission of heat energy from one body of the system to the other without changing the position of body or particle.
Convection: Convection is a process in which heat is transferred by the movement of a heated fluid i.e. air or water.

Note:
As an approach to know how heat is through empty space. We have seen three types of heat transfer which is conduction convection and radiation in which radiation is a type of heat transfer which can transmit heat through empty space i.e. heat from the sun or heat emitted from the filament of a light bulb.
