In response to the histamine via H2 receptors, parietal cells produce gastric acid i.e. hydrochloric acid, acetylcholine M3 receptors and gastrin receptors. The intrinsic factor and concentrated HCl are secreted by the oxyntic cells. As the oxyntic cells secrete intrinsic factors that are essential for the absorption of vitamin B12, the damage to oxyntic cells of gastric glands will result then in pernicious anaemia.

Through histamine, parietal cells are primarily regulated, acetylcholine and gastrin signalling from both central and native modulators. Throughout the length of the gland, parietal or oxyntic cells occur and are liable for the assembly of acid, which is important to motivate the opposite enzymes.
