The basic differences between a capture fisher and a culture fishery are as follows-
In the capture fisheries, the fishes are captured directly from the water bodies like oceans, rivers, lakes, estuaries and ponds using certain instruments like net, long lines etc. While in the culture fishery, the growing, rearing and capturing of fishes is done in restricted or small water bodies like lakes, tanks, ponds etc.

In case of capture fishing, taking care of the fishes are not required, but in case of culture fishing, continuous care and monitoring of fishes is required. In culture fisheries, rearing of fishes is done from a very young stage, that is, from spawn, fingerling or fry stages. A particular temperature, pH and health of the growing fishes are maintained in case of culture fisheries.

As capture fishing is a random process of capturing fish, the immature fishes are also captured. In capture fishing, about four tones of fishes can be captured at a time. But in the case of culture fishery, only the mature fishes are captured and that is based on the market demand. In culture fishing, the immature fishes like spawn, fingerlings are left to grow undisturbed, only the mature ones are harvested.

In mariculture, the culture of fishes is done in sea or marine water. On the other hand, the culture of fishes in freshwater and brackish water is called aquaculture.
