Spermiogenesis: The process of formation of sperm from spermatids is called spermiogenesis.
Spermiation: Post spermiogenesis, the sperm head will fix itself to the Sertoli cells and get it delivered from the seminiferous tubules by spermiation.
Additional Information: -The testis is located within a sack called the scrotum. Testis comprises 250 compartments called testicular lobules.
-Every single testicular lobule consists of 1 seminiferous tubule to a maximum of 3 seminiferous tubules.
-An individual seminiferous tubule is made of male germ cells and Sertoli cells. The exterior region of the seminiferous tubule possesses blood vessels and Leydig cells.
-Leydig cells are the place where the male sex hormones collectively are called androgens.
-Spermatogenesis: The interior wall of the seminiferous tubule will possess spermatogonia (immature male germ cells). Spermatogonia undergoes mitotic division. Each of the spermatogonia possesses 46 chromosomes (diploid). Few spermatogonia will undergo meiotic division to form primary spermatocytes. The first meiotic division of the primary spermatocyte results in the formation of 2 haploid cells (23 chromosomes). These are called secondary spermatocytes. The secondary spermatocytes will form 4 equal haploid cells called spermatids by completing the second meiotic division. The spermatids will then form sperms by spermiogenesis.
Note: Spermatogenesis is initiated during puberty. The enhanced levels of the gonadotropin-releasing hormone will stimulate the secretion of luteinizing and follicular stimulating hormones. The luteinizing hormone acts on Leydig cells and triggers the biogenesis and synthesis of androgens. Androgens will in turn trigger the spermatogenesis process.
