Biogas typically refers to a mixture of different gases produced by the breakdown of organic matter in the absence of oxygen. In large biogas plants, the remains of the plants are decomposed by bacteria in an airtight tank. As we know the Earth has an almost unlimited supply of plant remains, which makes biogas an important source of energy from renewable raw materials.

Basically, biogas is a mixture of various gases and chemicals. It majorly consists of Methane ${ CH }_{ 4 }$ which is about 60-65% and carbon dioxide ${ CO }_{ 2 }$ which is about 30-35%. Apart from this biogas also consists of water vapour which is about 4-5% and traces of hydrogen sulphide ${ H }_{ 2 }S$ and oxidized sulphur compounds.
Therefore, biogas is a mixture of Methane + ${ CO }_{ 2 }$.
