The syllabus of Modern Foreign language Class 10 is decided by the councils of the Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE). Due to the pandemic situation, the councils of ICSE have shortened the syllabus for the academic year 2024-25. The Class 10 Modern Foreign language group 1 syllabus of the ICSE board is followed by all the ICSE affiliated schools in India. The syllabus is designed to help students understand the language and use it effectively in everyday life. 

The syllabus focuses on four growth aspects, which are reading, writing, listening, and speaking. The total marks are divided into the Examination and internal assessment. Apart from writing, speaking skills are also checked by the Examiner. Students also have to write a creative article to express their knowledge about the language. Subject Combination For Students That are Not Allowed for ICSE Examination:

As per the ICSE, the students are not allowed to take up a few subjects in combination with each other. The ICSE 10th Exam pattern 2024-25, has started a few combinations of subjects that are not allowed, which are as follows:

  • Environmental Science (EVS) in Group II and Environmental Applications in Group III cannot be taken together.

  • Economic Applications in Group III cannot be taken together with Economics in Group II .

  • Commercial Applications in Group III cannot be taken together with Commercial Studies in Group II .

  • Sanskrit as a Classical language in group II cannot be taken together with Sanskrit as a second language in group I.

  • While in the Modern Foreign Language  there has to be a different language for all groups cannot be taken together.

The Modern Foreign language syllabus for Class 10 ICSE is designed into two parts. One is the Examination part, and the other is the assessment part. Class 10th Modern Foreign language syllabus's Examination part consists of the following topics:

Examination

  • Composition: Here, candidates have to write a short composition, including directions, explanations, narratives, or descriptions.

  • Letter: Candidates have to write either a formal or informal letter. The marking criteria include proper formatting of the letter.

  • Comprehension: The comprehension part presents an unknown passage of 150 words to students. Students have to study the passage and answer questions from the same.

  • Grammar: The grammar part includes sentence formation, vocabulary, and idioms. However, students do not have to answer detailed grammatical definitions.

  • Translation or Dialogue Writing: Students have to translate a passage from a foreign language to English. Dialogue writing is given based on everyday situations.

Internal Assessment

  • Listening Skills: Examiners will read aloud an article of 300 words twice in the foreign language. Students can note down important points. Further, students have to answer objective-type questions from the passage read before.

  • Speaking Skills: Students have to give a speech for about two minutes in a foreign language. After that, there will be a discussion for about three minutes about that topic with the Examiners. The presentation may include providing a description, narrating a situation, giving a report, or expressing an opinion.

  • Creative Writing: Students have to write short creative pieces as per the suggested assignment.

Modern Foreign Language Syllabus for Class 10 - Weightage of Marks

ICSE Class 10 Modern Foreign language syllabus is divided into two parts. Modern Foreign Language comes under Group A. All group A papers, including Modern Foreign language, have the marking system of eighty and twenty. The first part is eighty marks and the second part is twenty marks. The marking criteria depend on six significant factors: fluency of language, subject matter, organization, use of vocabulary, understanding, and gesture. Students should have fluency in the language. They should write well-organized contents that are relevant to the topic using appropriate vocabulary and emphasizing essential points. Students should also use spontaneous and natural gestures in oral assessments to score high in a Modern Foreign language.

Tips to Prepare for ICSE Class 10 Examination:

  • Students must read the complete syllabus and ICSE 10th Exam pattern 2024-25 thoroughly before starting the preparation.

  • Students should complete the syllabus at least one or two months before the commencement of the Examination to stay ahead of others.

  • After checking the ICSE Class 10th timetable 2024-25  students should try to make a plan for their study and formulate a strategy accordingly.
