Class 10 ICSE Home Science Syllabus

The Syllabus of home science, class 10, covers various topics that develop in the students the art of managing home. The syllabus consists of various interesting topics such as home furnishing, money management in-home and other topics which will help the students to develop the skills as a home manager. The syllabus has a theory and practical both. The theory part of the syllabus consists of 7 units. Here we will give a brief idea of each unit of the syllabus.

  • Unit 1 - Home Furnishing: Under the 1st unit the subject teaches about various types of colours and its applications. The topic helps the students to learn about the different fabrics for furnishing homes. The next subject under the topic is about the lighting of the homes. Then it also teaches the students how to organize the kitchen. 

  • Unit 2 - Money Management: Under this unit the subject teaches two topics, one is budgeting and the other one is fundamentals of banking. Under budgeting, it teaches the importance of making a budget and also the importance of saving. Under the fundamentals of banking, it teaches how to use a bank account. 

  • Unit 3 - Growth and Development of Children: This unit is about the care and attention that is to be given to the children between the age of 5-12. It teaches the students about the physical, emotional, and other developments of the children.

  • Unit 4 - Growth and Development During Adolescence: This unit teaches the students about physical growth during adolescence and pubertal changes. It gives knowledge of grooming and personal care. It also teaches the role of the family in the growth and development of children.

  • Unit 5 - Meal Planning: The unit is concerned about the diet plan and the meal of the members of a family.

  • Unit 6 - Textiles and Clothing: It teaches how to wash and take proper care of clothes.

  • Unit 7 - Consumer Education: The last unit teaches the students about consumer rights and responsibilities and the various methods of buying.


Home Science Syllabus For Class 10 - Weightage of Marks

The home science paper of ICSE board has two exams, one is written and the other is practical. The written exam consists of 100 marks and the practical exam or internal assessment also consists of 100 marks. The written exam question paper is divided into two sections. Section A will include short questions of 1 mark, 2 marks, 3 marks. Whereas, section B will include long type questions which consist of 5 marks. The internal assessment will include 100 marks out of which 50 marks will be assigned by the subject teacher and the rest 50 marks will be assigned by the external examiner.

Assignments that are given for Class 10 Home Science ICSE

  1. Preparation of nutritious tidbits and different sorts of sandwiches.  

  2. Removal of normal messes from garments/textures – oil/curry/turmeric, blood, color, ink, and grass.  

  3. Demonstration of different cuts of vegetables and organic products like cut, hack, dice, mince, juliennes to make simple plates of mixed greens.  

  4. Finding out from guardians about arranging family financial plans and saving techniques. 

  5. Preparation of fertilizer pits.  Gardening – pruned plants, planting of spices and therapeutic plants, and their consideration.

Yes, there is a grading system in the home science subject Class 10. It is as follows:

  • Grade 1: 4 marks on each criterion

  • Grade 2: 3 marks on each criterion

  • Grade 3: 2 marks on each criterion

  • Grade 4: 1 marks on each criterion

  • Grade 5: 0 marks on each criterion
