Introduction to the Metal Beryllium

Beryllium is a metal which belongs to alkaline earth metals they are called alkaline because they are found in the earth's crust and are alkaline. It is steel grey coloured metal and its valence is 2. Valency is the count of atoms that can be combined with a given element. It is found in the form of minerals meaning it occurs in combination with other elements. Beryllium is a very hard metal. Belgium is used in phones and aircraft.

Where is Beryllium found:

Beryllium is alkaline earth metal. From the name alkaline earth metal, we can conclude that Beryllium is found in the earth's crust. It does not occur independently; it is always found in combination with other minerals like beryl and emerald. Beryllium is mainly found in combination with 30 different minerals.  Almost 0.0002 percent of beryllium is found in igneous rocks. The largest beryllium deposits are found in the United States, constituting almost 60% of the earth's beryllium.  Beryllium is a very light element.

Symbol of Beryllium:

Chemical symbols are nothing but abbreviations of chemical compounds. Symbols mostly consist of one or two letters. The symbol of beryllium is “Be”. It is strong and Light weighted. It belongs to group 2 of the periodic table, elements of this group are mostly used in metallurgy.

The atomic number of Beryllium:

The atomic number of beryllium is “4”. Atomic number is the number of protons present in the element, so in the case of beryllium there are four protons present in it. For a compound to be stable there must be the presence of an equal number of neutrons and electrons. So for a stable beryllium atom, there must be 4 neutrons and 4 electrons present in it. The number of neutrons in an element can vary and these varying neutrons can form isotopes. And if the number of electrons is different from protons then it leads to the formation of ions.

Properties of Beryllium:

Every element consists of two types of properties called physical properties and chemical properties.

Physical Properties:

Physical Properties are the basic characteristics of an element:

  • Beryllium is a lustrous element.

  • It is very brittle.

  • It is a lighter metal with an atomic number of 4.

  • It has a very high melting and boiling point.

Chemical Properties:

Properties of substance which can be observed in a chemical reaction:

  • Beryllium reacts with the acid to form hydrogen gas.

  • Beryllium reacts with oxygen to form beryllium oxide.

Uses of Beryllium:

Barium is mostly used for industrial purposes; it is used in the form of alloys. Beryllium makes alloys with copper and nickel. This yellow it’s all used in making springs, electrodes, and electrical contracts. It is used in making gears for aircraft. Beryllium is also used in mobile phones.

Summary:

In this article, we learned about a metal called beryllium. It is alkaline earth metal which is a group 2 element in the periodic table and the period is also 2. The chemical symbol of beryllium is Be. The atomic number of beryllium is 4 and its atomic mass is 9. Beryllium is mostly found in a combined state with other metals. In the earth's crust, it is found in igneous rocks.
