A Hen and her Chicks Story

Once, there was a hen who had three little chicks. Two of the chicks were very obedient and always stayed near their mother. But the third chick was a bit naughty and didn’t listen to the mother hen. One day, the mother hen came upon a cob of corn. As soon as she saw it, she called her children and told them not to eat the corn as it will get stuck in their throats. Listening to their mother, the two good chicks didn’t even look at the corn. However, the naughty third chick ran towards the corn and started pecking at it. But alas! The corn got stuck in its throat. The chick started to get hiccups because it wasn’t able to breathe.

The Mother Hen Comes to the Rescue

Hearing the sound of increasing hiccups, the mother hen rushed to the chick. She was scared to see that the corn had gotten stuck in its throat. Worriedly she said, “Wait here and go anywhere. I will get some water for you.” Saying that she rushed to a nearby pond. Once she reached there, she requested the pond to give her some water. The pond said, “Sister, I would gladly give you water but you will need a cup to take it. There is an old woman sitting nearby. Go and get a cup from her and then you can take the water.”

The hen then rushed to the old woman and asked for a cup. The woman said, “I can make you a cup but you will have to get me a banana leaf from the tree nearby. Also, you have to find my needle for me.” The hen did as told and got the needle for the woman. She then went to the banana tree to ask for a leaf. The tree said, “I can give you the leaf but you will have to ask the farmer to cut the huge bananas that are in my branches as it is very uncomfortable for me.”

Finally, the hen went to the farmer and requested him to cut the bananas. The farmer said, “I will do that but you will have to give me the eggs that you lay for one week.” The hen agreed and the farmer cut the bananas off the tree. Then the tree gave the hen a leaf from which the woman made a cup and she took water from the pond in the cup and gave it to her chick. The corn was finally out of the chick’s throat and he vowed to always be obedient to his mother.
