How Raja Rasalus Friends Forsook Him: Summary

Raja Rasalu was travelling to a far destination one day when he came across a lonely, desolate and dark forest. Therefore, he decided to take a halt for a night and set a watch too. He split the time into three watches, giving the first to the carpenter, the second to the jeweller, and the third he kept for himself. Later on, the goldsmith was in fear that the   Prince's heart would break at the change from his former lavish existence, as he had  spread a couch of fresh grass for his master and motivated him with his words as below:

Cradled till now on softest down,

The grass is thy couch tonight;

Yet grieve not thou if Fortune frown —

Brave hearts heed not her slight!"

A snake emerged from a nearby thicket and approached Raja Rasalu and the goldsmith's son as they slept. The young carpenter asked, "Who are you, and why have you come here?"

I have destroyed everything within a radius of twelve miles! "The serpent emerged. "Who are you to have the audacity to come here?

Later, the carpenter was assaulted by the snake, and they engaged in combat until the snake was killed. The carpenter then buried the snake's body behind his shield and kept quiet from his fellow soldiers so as not to scare them because, like the goldsmith, he feared the Prince might become discouraged.

When Raja Rasalu was finally in charge of keeping watch, a terrible, unfathomable creature suddenly emerged from the undergrowth. Rasalu bravely approached it and called out, "So, who are you? what brought you here, too?"

Rasalu then took his mighty bow and shot the creature with an arrow, causing it to flee into a cave, where the Prince pursued it. And they fought hard and long until the horror finally subsided, allowing Rasalu to watch in peace.

When the young carpenter and goldsmith saw the horrible, horrifying, unfathomable evil Raja Rasalu had killed, they were horrified. They begged to be permitted to return to the city, crying, "O powerful Rasalu, you are a Raja and a hero! You can combat such atrocities; we are just common people, and if we follow you, we will undoubtedly perish. You may not care about such things, but we do. Let's leave! Rasaula looked at them sorrowfully. Thus they said:

"Aloes linger long before they flower:

Gracious rain too soon is overpast;

Youth and strength are with us but an hour:

All glad life must end in death at last!

But king reigns king without consent of courtier;

Rulers may rule, though none heed their command.

Heaven-crown'd heads stoop not, but rise the haughtier,

Alone and houseless in a stranger's land!"

Thus at last his friends forsook him and he conquered his journey alone.
