The Deer Story

Long ago, a river flowed through the heart of a forest. On one bank lived a beautiful and clever deer, the jewel of his kind. Across the waterway dwelled a wicked crocodile, a sharp-toothed guardian to treasure more precious than gold. He wanted to catch that elusive buck.

One day, while grazing near the riverbank, the deer noticed some bright red berries on the opposite shore. As the deer considered how tasty they must be and wished he could swim across to get them, a cry erupted from his mouth: Oh!” How I wish I had a way to cross that water right now.” The deer kept thinking of the juicy berries and thought, “If only I could get across! But then again, if I do, that wicked crocodile will eat me. Oh! What am I going to do?!”

The deer stood at a safe distance and said, “The king is holding a banquet tonight and has invited you crocodiles.” There will be a lot of delicious food at the banquet tonight,” said the crocodile in delight. “Oh my gosh! The King is inviting us?!? This is unbelievable!!!" the deer cried out in amazement as well. Then he turned back to the crocodile and asked, "Is it tonight?"

In a voice that sounded like the King's, the deer replied, "The king has ordered me to count all the crocodiles in this river."Please line them up from smallest to largest, so I can keep track of my numbers.”

The crocodile shouted to all his friends, “Come along! We have been invited to a banquet by the deer! Let us go lineup so he can count us.” The crocodiles hurried and obeyed him.

The deer then asked, “Will you help me? As I count, I will climb onto your backs and jump from one to the other. Then we can get food for our families.” The other animals agreed because they liked the sound of this plan and because it meant that everyone would be safe.

“You do not have to be afraid,” said the crocodiles. “We would never eat you! We promise!”The deer jumped from one crocodile to the next, counting each time." Finally, he reached the other side, thanking Mr Crocodile for help. He ran off, leaving the crocodiles angry and annoyed at being tricked.
