एक बार सुलेमान नाम के बादशाह बहुत गर्मी मे आकाश में उड़नखटोले से कहीं जा रहे थे |
बादशाह को बहुत धूप लग रही थी तो उन्होंने वहां उड़ रहे गिद्धों से उनके पंखों से सिर पर छाया करने को कहा ।
गिद्धों ने बादशाह को बहाना बनाते हुए मना कर दिया ।
इसके बाद बादशाह आगे बढ़ गए । अब उनकी मुलाकात हुदहुदों के मुखिया से हुई । सुलेमान ने उससे भी मदद माँगी।
वह बहुत चालाक था उसने अपने सभी हुदहुदों को इकट्ठा करके बादशाह सुलेमान के ऊपर छाया करने को कहा |
बादशाह हुदहुदों से बहुत प्रसन्न हुए और मुखिया को एक इच्छा माँगने को कहा ।
हुदहुदों के मुखिया ने हुदहुदों के मुखिया ने अपने साथियों से सलाह लेकर बादशाह से वरदान माँगा कि हमारे सिर पर सोने की कलगी निकल आए ।
इसके बाद सुलेमान ने उनकी प्रार्थना मान ली और सभी के सिर पर सोने की कलगी आ गई ।
इसके बाद जैसे जैसे लोगों मे यह बात फैली तो लोग तीर से हुदहुदों को मारकर सोना इकट्ठा करने लगे । जिससे हुदहुदों की संख्या कम होने लगी ।
मुखिया घबराकर सुलेमान के पास गया और सोने की कलगी हटाने की विनती की ।
सुलेमान ने उन्हें वरदान दिया कि अब तुम्हारे सिर पर सुंदर परों का ताज होगा और तभी से हुदहुदों के सिर पर यह ताज शोभा पा रहा है ।

हुदहुद एक बहुत ही सुंदर पक्षी है । हुदहुद का सारा शरीर रंग-बिरंगा और चटकीला होता है ।
इसके पंख काले-काले होते हैं जिन पर मोटी सफेद धारियाँ बनी होती हैं ।
गर्दन का अगला हिस्सा बादामी रंग का होता है और चोटी बादामी रंग की पर उसके सिरे काले और सफेद होते हैं |
इसकी दुम का भीतरी हिस्सा सफेद और बाहरी हिस्सा काले रंग का होता है |
इसकी चोंच पतली, लंबी तथा तीखी होती है | जिससे यह आसानी से ज़मीन के भीतर छिपे हुए कीड़े-मकोड़ों को ढूँढ़ निकालता है | कही कही इसे 'हजामिन' चिड़िया के नाम से भी जाना जात हैं ।

बोलते समय यह तीन बार 'हुप-हुप- हुप' सा कुछ कहता है, इसीलिए इसे अंग्रेजी में 'हूप ऊ' कहा जाता है |
