This virus weakens the immune system by destroying a type of white blood cells in our body called T-cells or CD4 cells, which play a key role in the immune system of the body. When this happens, HIV infection can lead to AIDS. It is a complex illness with a variety of symptoms. World AIDS Day was first observed in 1988. Since then, World AIDS day is designated on 1st December. World AIDS Day is one of the eight official global public health campaigns marked by the WHO. This day is dedicated to raise awareness, educate, and improve the understanding of the disease globally. The symptoms of the disease can vary depending upon the stage of infection. In the first few weeks, symptoms can be similar to influenza-like illness, but as it progresses severe illnesses like tuberculosis, meningitis, severe bacterial infections, and cancer can develop if not treated. The infection is transmitted through sexual contact with an infected person, sharing needles or syringes, receiving blood transfusions, or from mother to child.
