The Western Ghats in India provide favorable conditions for orographic rainfall. The warm and moist air from the Arabian sea is blocked by the Western Ghats and gets lifted over mountain ranges. As the air rises and cools, orographic clouds are formed resulting in precipitation and dry winds to blow over Peninsular India. Orographic rainfall serves as the source of heavy precipitation over the upwind of mountain range termed as spillovers and low rainfall on the Lee side of the mountain range, sometimes called as Rainshadow areas.
Due to orographic rainfall, the western side of the western ghats receives heavy rainfall, more than 250cm rainfall per year. Western slopes of Anaimalai, Palni, and Nilgiri ranges Mahabaleshwar, situated on the Western Ghats receives very heavy rainfall whereas Pune lying on rain shadow area receives less amount of rainfall only about 70 cm.
