Hint: The acid present in the acid rain reacts with the marble of monuments and corrodes it slowly. The slow corrosion of marble of the monument by acid rain is known as marble cancer. The sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxide present in pollution get deposited on these buildings.
Complete answer:
The corrosion of buildings and statues made up of marbles by action of sulfuric acid and nitric acid is called marble cancer. The acids in the acid rain react with calcium carbonate of marble and degrade it. These oxides absorb moisture from the air and get converted into respective acids and cause corrosion.
Marble cancer occurs due to a type of reaction of marble with a chemical compound in which the reaction is called corrosion. Sulphur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide are the gases that are responsible for marble cancer.
Acidic rain fall on TajMahal thus the monument got corroded by the harmful chemicals. India’s Taj Mahal Is Changing Color Because of Insect Feces and Pollution. The sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxide present in pollution get deposited on these buildings. TajMahal is completely made of marble, acid rains reacts with marble to form a powder-like substance which is then washed away by the rain.
Note:
Remember the sulphur and nitrogen are not directly responsible for marble corrosion but the acids formed by their reaction with water is directly responsible for the marble corrosion. Here, we should also note that the acid rain results when phosphorus, sulphuric and nitric acid in polluted air, and rain reacts with calcite in marble and limestone, the calcite dissolves.
