Direct democracy or Pure democracy is a type of democracy in which deciding policy initiatives are in the hands of people directly. The theory and practice of direct democracy and its participation characteristic was the core of work of many theorists, philosophers, politicians, and social critics. Some of the most important among them are Jean Jacques Rousseau and John Stuart Mill.
An example of Direct democracy is founded within the Crow Nation which is a Native American Tribe in the United States of America. The tribe is formed of all voting-age members and is organized around a General Council. The General Council through referendums can create legally-binding decisions.
