The Tawa Dam is built on the Tawa River in Central India. It is situated in the Hoshangabad District of Madhya Pradesh. The construction of the Tawa Dam also led to the formation of the Tawa Reservoir. The construction of the dam began in 1958 and ended in 1978. The Dam was built by late Shri Vinay Kumar Diwan. He served twenty years as an MLA and was the public representative of the region. Because of his work for public welfare he was also known as Denva ke Gandhi.
After its completion and the formation of the Tawa Reservoir, it provided sufficient water for the irrigation of thousands of hectares of farming lands in Harda and Hoshangabad districts.
It started working as a power production plant in 1998.
Technical Detail:-
It is a canal head project, i.e. its main objective was to divert water from the river and into canals.
Its catchment area (or the total usable area) is approximately 6000km2.
The full reservoir level (FRL) or the highest water level during operational condition is 335.3 cubic meters. It has two 6.75 MegaWatt turbo generators.
During the monsoon season it also serves as an attraction for tourists. The Madhya Pradesh Tourism Department has also started a cruise boat service for the visitors to the dam and the reservoir. The Tawa Reservoir also serves as the western boundary of the Bori Wildlife Sanctuary and the Satpura National Park.

Note:The Bori Wildlife Sanctuary, The Satpura National Park and the Pachmarhi Wildlife sanctuary along with the Tawa Dam and the Tawa Reserve are an important tourist attraction in Madhya Pradesh. They provide a unique central Indian highland ecosystem to this area.
