- Assam is the oldest oil-producing state of India. The most common oil fields found here are Digboi, Naharkatiya and Moran-Hugrijan.

- Gujarat is the most important oil-producing state in the western part of India. Here the important oil fields are Ankleshwar, Khambhat and Kalol.

- Tamil Nadu-ONGC crude oil near Chidambaram town has been recently discovered. The present contribution is less but the potential could be enormous.
