Hint: Here, first of all we must add the number of new births to the total population of the year and then we must subtract the total number of people who died or left the town during the year.

Complete step-by-step answer:
Since, the total population of the town is given as 59000.
Now the number by which the population of the town increased due to the new births = 4356
So, the new total population of the town may be given as the sum of the earlier population and the number of new births.
Therefore, the new population = 59000 + 4536
                                                         = 63536
Therefore, the new population of the town is 63536.
Now, the number of people died or left the town in the same year = 9218
So, now we will have to subtract 9218 from the earlier total population for determining the total population of the town.
Since, the total population of the town earlier as we have calculated is = 63536.
So, the new population on subtraction will be:
New population = 63536 – 9218
                              = 54318
Hence, the total population of the town at the end of the year is 54318.

Note: The students should note here that we may have solved this question in a reverse way also. So, we may have first subtracted the total number of dead people or people who left the town and then we may have added the number of new births to the number obtained on subtraction.
