By the end of the 1950s, the oceanographers of the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean started to describe and understand the features of the oceans. But the Indian Ocean remained unexplored. It was important to address the distribution of food resources, fish productivity, the geology of the ocean, problems that are linked to monsoon cycles.
