Hint: The President refers to the nominal executive of our country and is elected indirectly by the people of India. He does not hold much power except ceremonial authorities.
Complete answer:
The President of India , officially the President of the Republic of India, refers to the ceremonial head of state of India as well as the Commander-in-chief of the Indian Armed Forces. The president is indirectly elected through an electoral college which comprises the Parliament of India (both houses) and also the legislative assemblies of each of India's states and territories, who themselves are all directly elected.
Given below is any one reason why the President is elected indirectly :
As per the system of Parliamentary Democracy which exists in India, The President is basically a nominal executive while the real power resides with the Council of Ministers which is headed by the Prime Minister that is the real executive and thus, the President is only the nominal executive. The President is elected indirectly as spending huge amounts of money, time and other resources for direct election of the nominal executive was not considered necessary by our Constitution makers.
Therefore, Our constitution makers didn’t consider it as an important task to elect the president through elections and spend a huge amount of money, time as well as other resources.
Note: The election process of the President is a more extensive process than the prime minister who is also elected indirectly (not elected by people directly) by the Lok Sabha members only. While the President being the constitutional head along with responsibilities in order to protect, defend and preserve the constitution as well as the Rule of Law in a constitutional democracy with constitutional supremacy, is elected in an extensive manner by the Lok Sabha’s and Rajya Sabha’s members, and state legislative assemblies within a secret ballot procedure.
